App-ucation Month 2013 ~ Good Karma Apps, Video, Giveaway & Interview

AppMo2013Stamp

Hi! It’s me, Ty!

App-ucation Month is one of my favorite times of the year (on my blog) because I get to share all of my favorite learning apps,  make lots of videos, introduce you to awesome new people and give stuff away all to raise money for an iPad and Down syndrome cognition research.

While we wait for medical advances in cognition research for people with Down syndrome, there is technology out there that continues to increase a child’s ability to learn.

The month of February is dedicated to those technologies on Ty’s Adventures. You can click the AppMo2013 Stamp at the top of this post to go to the AppMo landing page to find links of everything AppMo.

This post is dedicated to our super-amazing-splendiferous-fantastical friends at Good Karma Apps because without them, my dream of having my own iPad never would have come to life. They also provided ALL of the iTunes giveaways for AppMo2013 in addition to raising money.

So this is me (& my family) sending out the BIGGEST, FATTEST cyber-hug you’ve ever gotten, Good Karma Apps & Lemonade and Cookies for Change!!!!

Janine is the force behind Good Karma Apps, and she took the time to let us get to know her a bit better, and in case you were wondering, yes, she’s a chocolate lover, too! woop! woop! And we’ll be giving away a $15 iTunes card just for fun.

1. What’s you name?

Janine

2. What do you do?

I am a Mom and I create apps for Good Karma Apps.

3. How many kids do you have and what is the big favorite, chocolate or vanilla I MUST know!

I have three kids (Isabella 13, Will 10, and Charlotte 5) and hands-down favorite is Chocolate.

4. What’s your favorite snack? Are youa goldfish person, too?

I do love goldfish, but I think my favorite snack is Sweet Maui Onion Potato Chips.

5. What made you want to create apps for kids with special needs?

I started creating apps for SN because of my son, Will.  Will has Autism and is non-verbal.  I tried to make apps that I thought could help him.  He turns out the apps I made for him were helpful for other kids too.

6. Do your kids think it’s pretty cool, their Mom helps so many kids?

I think my oldest daughter thinks it is pretty cool.  My two youngest wish I would create more apps with trucks and “tea parties” in them.

7. What is the favorite app in your house right now & why?

We have a bunch of favorites in my house.  Will’s favorite is “Scene Speak”

as he LOVES it when his sister’s create books about him and our family.  They usually record secret messages and put them in the picture.  He loves finding the recordings, especially if they have made funny sounds and comments.   Charlie loves Toca Tailor

and my teenager, Isabella, seems to be enjoying Instagram a little too much!   I have too many favorites to list, but if I was going to choose one that is an app for someone my age, I like LearnVest,

I love all the Good Karma Apps. For me, the Visual Schedule Planner would work well as my daughter gets older and we have a lot more to do She does well with a First Then app now and it would come in handy when I do therapy to show the child what we’re doing and mark off when we’re finished. I LOVE the Scene Speak. it’s so helpful to show the child choices and where things are located but I love they added a what hurts scene. That is awesome!
